What I Like To Eat

Actually I don’t eat much red meat, or bread. But since I have your attention now…

As far as food is concerned, I am not like other long distance hikers. Most folks eat lots of high calorie/sugar processed food. I can’t blame them. It’s cheap, light weight, prepackaged, and convenient. Oh yeah, and it works great. I know lots of great athletes that push 40+ miles a day and rock this kind of diet with no stove. (no cooking) Just check out John Zahorian’s video on his bag of food for one day on the trail. And-No, I don’t judge John as the video states. Rather the opposite. I am amazed at his accomplishments and the willingness to share honest human condition on video while hiking thousands of miles. This guy hikes 40 sometimes 50 miles a day. Yeah. Badasssss. Right? His food works for him and many other ultra-light, speed record, mega-beasts. As for food I just do it differently. A warm drink to start the day warms the soul and lifts the spirits. I carry a stove. I love making hot soups at night with rice noodles. I often carry leafy greens from town. In fact, I will carry almost any food item out of town that is “heavy.” This food usually gets eaten first. By now I am sure you are understanding why I was given the trail name “Gourmet.” I love sharing special food items with thru hikers. Imagine at the end of the day someone pulls out a whole apple pie for dessert. Yeah. That’s me.

Here are some of my favorites…

Breakfast: oatmeal packets, muesli mix, coconut powder, chia seeds, jam, brown sugar
Lunch/snacks: marys gone crackers, hummus, raw rev bars, almonds, cashews, walnuts, pecans, peanuts, dried blueberries, dried bananas, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, M&ms, chocolate chips, strawberry jelly packets, dark chocolate,
Dinners: ramen noodles, Potatoes bullion cube with dehydrated peas, carrots, with organic beef
Extras: green vitamins, chia seeds, olive oil packs, nut butter packets
Drinks: ginger tea, peppermint tea, protein mix,
Desert: black licorice, ginger candy, dark chocolate
When in towns buy: bananas, blueberries, cheese, kombucha, greens, tomatoes,
