During my thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail in 2012, I met a resourceful and quirky young man named Andy. He was on leave from UC Berkeley where he was studying astrophysics. Little did we know at the time, Andy who’s trail name became “Astro” was battling cancer. Andy remarkably finished the entire PCT while getting off trail several times to receive medical treatment. Not even a year later we lost a dear friend. Perhaps more importantly, we lost a brilliant young mind with the kind of social consciousness that we desperately need for the future.
In honor of our friend, we formed “Team Astro” made up of four hikers: Jeffrey “Oakdale” Winchester, Rick “Moose” Wiggins, Ashley “Voodoo” Ross, and me. Summer of 2015 we hiked 1200 miles on the Pacific Northwest Trail from Glacier National Park in Montana to Cape Alava,Olympic National Park on the Pacific Ocean. Team Astro yeah!
We raised over $2000 for Childrens Cancer Association based in Portland. They are a wonderful group that really helps families. They even have a music program!
